When I started creating wallpaper years ago, I decided to share them with the world. However, back then there were much fewer sites on the internet than there are today, and we didn't have the powerful search engines like Bing, Yahoo and Google that enabled us to easily find exactly the right image to fit our personality and mood. The practice of personalizing one's computer quickly became popular, especially since Microsoft built into the early versions of Internet Explorer the ability to set any image that was on a webpage directly into your desktop background (the same method that is used in all modern browsers today, in fact). It was only much later, in the 90's after Windows 95 came out that people were able to decorate their computer desktops with pictures, either ones they had scanned themselves - though no one could afford scanners back then - or ones they had found on the internet. Later, when I grew up and the first personal computers were sold to the public, they were not as powerful as the ones on the market today, and there was no Microsoft Windows, so computer desktop wallpaper had not been invented then yet either. Wallpaper only came in the form that you actually put on walls with wallpaper paste, or was used to line the bottoms of silverware drawers (don't ask me why, I never was able to figure that one out myself). When I was a kid, personal computers hadn't even been invented yet. Want To Know Why I Make These Holiday Wallpapers? Hans Rudel was a Stuka pilot and the single most decorated German serviceman in the entire war. A description of the Blitzkrieg and it's successes. (It was Rommel and one other officer that got skill boosts.) This is the special event you get for taking Paris within 40 days. If that happens, Greece will follow soon after. Whether or not it happens remains to be seen, but they're the most likely target when it comes to further conquest. While extremely rare, Yugoslavia will sometimes avoid this coup. In response, the Axis invaded and conquered Yugoslavia. This lead to a British backed coup de tat. Yugoslavia's government signed this pact historically, despite the fact that such a move was extremely unpopular with Yugoslavia's population. Once the Tripartite Pact event fires, you can try to get Yugolsavia to join the Axis. As we're allied with Italy, I went ahead and got them to sign the Tripartite Pact. You can convince Portugal to join the Axis.Īs of this event, the Axis consists of Germany, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Spain, and Portugal.īecause we did not recognize Manchukuo, whether we tried to get both to sign or just Japan to sign. If you have an alliance with Spain, good relations with Portugal, and have captured Gibraltar. To be honest? I think it was a terrible plan that would only have succeeded in making it easier for Germany to conquer the Swiss. Interestingly, the Swiss plan in the event of a German invasion was to abandon everything and retreat to hidden mountain redoubts. Really, the only thing that might slow you down is that all their provinces have the Mountain terrain type, as well as land fortifications. They're surrounded on all sides by Germany and Italy. Taking Switzerland isn't terribly difficult. But for some reason the decision to do so vanished. I was originally going to give you a choice between an event where you economically dominate Switzerland and this invasion. I decided to launch Operation Tannenbaum. And Germany has multiple events, including Barbarossa, that require a German occupied Paris. France gets all it's other provinces back. That and, the general peace kind of screws with your other events. I think it's a good thing that you went for the resources, if only because I'm not sure how fucked up those events might have become without a France to screw with. The British are asked to participate, but they always refuse to recognize the validity of this treaty. Italy takes Tunisia, Nice, Grenoble, and Corsica. I honestly don't remember if they get those back. Any African provinces France owns that once belonged to the German Empire. It's basically Germany, Italy, and Spain taking what they want from France. What you're actually doing is setting up a Second Treaty of Versailles, only this one is punishing France instead of Germany. The option most likely to get Spain in the Axis is actually the one where you call for a general peace treaty. Said volunteers were part of an actual division, known as Azul, that Spain loaned to Germany for their fight against the Soviets. What it gets you is a free division made up of Spanish volunteers. As it implies, asking for volunteers doesn't get an alliance. If France still existed under the Vichy regime, offering them Morocco has a 50/50 shot of getting them to join the Axis. This is actually pretty lucky on my part, because giving them resources is the option least likely to get an alliance out of them. Hell, they successfully took NI by the time I hit the end of what makes up this update. They're already attacking Northern Ireland. As I said in the above post, I'm not going to spend money just to save you the trouble of a few mouse clicks.įirst and foremost. So if you actually want to see what I'm putting up, you're going to have to right click on that photobucket crap and bring the image up in a new tab or window or however your browser works. Just promoting a guy that deserves the love, like he's giving Dark Souls 2 a lot of love that initially deserved it. "Flames of Old" is more than ambition, it's a masterwork in progress. This is generally an depressive understatement, considering it's "fought a losing battle" at the moment great concepts and design were cut down to poor implementation and polishing because it didn't just face some development problems - it got shorted of two years in development. Dark Souls 2 does a lot a things poorly, and it does a lot of things great! It's often touted that Dark Souls 2 was made by the incompetent B team and saw some development problems. It is definitely a little more masculine than the books I usually read, but it didn’t seem to impact my enjoyment of the story one bit. I actually really enjoyed it, I don’t know whether I was expecting to or not. The storyline was really interesting, I wanted to know more and I enjoyed the conspiracy element of it all. Killing Floor is the first book in the Jack Reacher novels and that series is one of the most popular that we loan out at the library, so I didn’t really need any other excuse to borrow it myself. This is clearly a massively popular series (I believe a movie adaptation of one of the later ones came out recently) but it's obviously not something that's up my alley, and I think I'll be skipping most of these. But something that I do expect in a first book, even though the writing might not be as polished as that of an established author (and, let's be honest here, there are plenty of authors that debut with beautifully written books, so we can still only push that one so far) is that they be thoughtful, and this was not that. Honestly, what he and his buddies did her merits a coverup at least as big as that of the counterfeiting scheme-they did destroy several million dollars, on top of everything else-but no one seems to care, at all. But apparently, because he's no longer in the military and doesn't have a permanent home, he's free to do whatever he wants, and damn the consequences. Someone like Reacher, who apparently spent decades working in military police, should have known better. It's one of those things that just grated on my nerves for the duration of the book, and I couldn't get over it. And Child can't really play it off as if the thought that the Secret Service was corrupt it's pretty clear from early on that the counterfeiting is a small, local operation. Instead they apparently think that Treasury bureaucrats and university professors will do a better job of solving their problems. Case in point here: despite the main plot revolving around a massive counterfeiting scheme, Reacher and his cronies spend their time doing everything except the one thing that actually makes sense: calling the Secret Service. It's another recurring pet peeve of mine that in mysterious no one ever seems to call in backup. But this book seems to get it even wrong-er than most, if for on other reason than the sheer scale of what the aftermath would have realistically been. That's something that most thriller/mystery books never seem to get right: the legal aftermath. When he stumbles into a problem occurring in a small town, he manages to convince the few honest people he encounters-who are cops, nonetheless-to be okay with at least a dozen murders, several arsons, and a dozen other crimes to boot, and then to just let him walk away. He also seems to have a detrimental effect on everyone around him. He has a massive superiority complex to everyone around him, who are all cardboard cutouts of characters. The writing is very stilted, the sentences choppy-though complete, which is more than I can say for some books I've read this year-and Reacher as a character just grated on my nerves. Reading my favorite author's first books at this point in life makes me wince, though I can definitely trace her growth as a writer over time. It was Child's first book, so I can completely understand that. But it's very generic and the writing isn't particularly riveting. There were aspects of the mystery that I didn't have quite pinned down, but I had an idea of them, and other parts of it were glaringly clear.īut here's the thing: it's not a bad book. I'm coming to it nearly twenty years after it was first published, but I have to say that I wasn't terribly impressed with it as a whole. The Killing Floor is the fist book in the Jack Reacher series, and it was a book my mother had mentioned she was interested in reading, so I picked it for a reading challenge category.
