Throughout most of his life, Thomson was a leading scientific figure in Britain. Research since that time has resulted in the abandonment of the Rutherford model in favor of other atomic models. The Rutherford atomic model described the structure of the atom as a positively charged nucleus around which negatively charged electrons circulated. He maintained this notion until experimental research and theoretical work indicated that the atomic model described in 1911 by Ernest Rutherford, a former student of Thomson, was much more likely. According to Thomson’s view, each atom was a positively charged sphere with electrons scattered throughout (like bits of fruit in a plum pudding). Thomson was initially a strong proponent of what is commonly called the plum-pudding atomic model or the Thomson atomic model, although many other representations of the atom were suggested by his contemporaries. Once the existence of the electron was accepted, the next step was to consider how the particles were incorporated into the atom. These and additional studies carried out by Thomson and others quickly led to widespread acceptance of Thomson’s discovery. In one experiment, Thomson attempted to use magnetism to see if negative charge could be segregated from cathode rays, in another he tried to deflect the rays with an electric field, and in a third he assessed the charge-to-mass ratio of the rays. The evidence he produced in support of his theoretical claims was culled from a series of innovative experiments with cathode ray tubes. On April 30, 1897, Thomson made his discovery public while giving a lecture to the Royal Institution. That same year, when Thomson returned to Cambridge, he made his most significant scientific discovery, that of the electron (which he initially referred to as the corpuscle). In 1897, the lectures were published as Discharge of Electricity through Gases. During a visit to the United States in 1896, he gave a series of lectures discussing his findings. In the early 1890s, much of Thomson’s research focused on electrical conduction in gases. Coverage of these efforts, which continued over many years, appeared in Thomson’s 1892 treatise Notes on Recent Researches in Electricity and Magnetism. The receipt of such considerable honors by so young a scientist was highly unusual, but was largely the result of Thomson’s significant early work expanding James Clerk Maxwell’s theories of electromagnetism. Also in 1884, the Royal Society of London elected Thomson as a Fellow. In 1883, he became a lecturer at Cambridge and the following year was appointed Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics, becoming the successor to Lord Rayleigh. In 1880, Thomson received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and became second wrangler, a title bestowed on the second highest-scoring individual on the Cambridge mathematics exams.įollowing graduation, Thomson became a Fellow at Trinity College and began work at the Cavendish Laboratory, part of the Cambridge Physics Department. He remained associated with Cambridge University in varying capacities the rest of his life. He then transferred to Trinity College, Cambridge, on a mathematics scholarship. However, through the efforts of his family and scholarships he continued at Owens College until 1876. Thomson’s father died only a few years into his college studies, making it financially difficult for Thomson to remain in school. He entered Owens College when he was 14 years old, where he became interested in experimental physics, though he had initially intended to pursue a career in engineering. The son of a bookseller, Thomson was born on December 18, 1856, in Cheetham Hill, located just north of Manchester, England. Thomson received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906 for his work exploring the electrical conductivity of various gases. A series of experiments with cathode rays he carried out near the end of the 19th century led to his discovery of the electron, a negatively charged atomic particle with very little mass. Thomson, was a British physicist who first theorized and offered experimental evidence that the atom is a divisible entity rather than the basic unit of matter, as was widely believed at the time. Their vastly improved Playlist now seems entirely capable of burning masters, and the layout looks very much like the "checkerboard" arrangement of WB, complete with a region list, tweakable crossfades, and levels. I've been a Peak user since v.1 for 10-12 years, but never used for the actual mastering or even burning discs, it's a good utility app for doing file conversions, file repairs, batch conversions, misc other uses.īut a lot has changed with Peak Pro 6. It would seem that the Image bounce & data files found in the WB "package" could easily be converted to a DDP bounce, should Apple obtain permission/license from DCS for DDP support, but I digress. It's a real shame, WB is such a easy to use application, but Apple won't give it the attention it deserves, much less address it's bugs, and it won't do DDP. I had found WB v1.2 to be very stable with OSX 10.4.x, but I hear WB's actually gotten worse with v1.5 and 10.5 Leopard. The final straw with WaveBurner OSX was when Barry found the WB "bit bug", which many of us verified with various tests. from WB to PMCD and then soundBlade (with Peak as an alternative). The website is quite unclear about this.Hello Holger, I think your needs will be met well by PMCD and once you upgrade to SoundBlade you can start bringing your external hardware into its mix engine and perhaps move much of the mastering process to that platform. Peak can provide DDP too, but it's an extra cost option. Your replicator may provide an upload to their server as well. I deliver DDP file sets to my replicator on data DVD's, archived and I include a checksum. You can make proofing CD's from the DDP, btw with PMCD. So you save them a step and another place they can screw up. After all, when you give a redbook CD to the replicator they just turn that into a DDP set anyway. This takes so many variables out of the process. Since you're talking about replication and not duplication, please consider switching your delivery format to DDP filesets. You can upgrade to SoundBlade later, but PMCD's learning curve is much lower so you won't be taking a lot out of your schedule right now. OK, knowing what you do, I'd suggest PMCD for now. Any ideas? And WaveBurner is a bit unstable to say the least, I don't have time for hit & miss with my increasingly busy mastering schedule. What is absolutely essential is something that will give me error free red books that can be used for glass master replication. I've heard that Peak Pro 6 is a bit buggy, but I'm not sure what to think. The Sonic Studio website is a complete mess so I'm not quite sure this is the version I'm looking for, but it probably is and I don't need advanced sound editing features or plug-ins, etc. The actual audio processing I do in Logic Pro, so I'm exporting 24 bit or 16 bit files (16 bit to WaveBurner at the moment) to the premaster software and compile the cd there. This is used to talk about past events, the same way that English uses the simple past (e.g. The most important compound tense in French is the passé composé. However, there are several other tenses that use an auxiliary verb/helping verb to make another tense. For each of these, the verb stands by itself. So far, we’ve only gone over the four simple tenses of the faire conjugation. ‘They would do business in Moscow if…’ The Compound Tenses of Faire ‘You would do the talking/make conversation’Įlles fer aient des affaires à Moscou si… These endings are actually the same as the endings for l’imparfait, but attached to a different verb stem. For the conditional form you use the same fer- as the future and simply affix the regular conditional endings. This often comes along with the word si (if), but not always. When you want to talk about what would be, French uses a different verb form called le conditionnel (the conditional). ‘They will do business in Moscow’ The Verb Faire in the Conditional Form ‘You will do the talking / make conversation’ The future tense of faire actually looks identical to the future tense of être if you swap out the s- at the beginning for f. In order to form the future tense, the faire conjugation uses the verb stem fer- and adds on the regular endings. Now that you can talk about things in the present and the past, let’s get to the future. ‘They were doing business in Moscow’ The Future Conjugation of Faire ‘You were doing the talking / making conversation’ In the imparfait, faire conjugates like most imperfect verbs using fais– as a base. Thankfully, in the imparfait, the conjugation of faire is very regular compared to its present tense. This form usually translates to ‘ used to’ or ‘ was/were.’ Putting the verb faire in the imperfect is particularly useful when you want to talk about how the weather was during an event or an action you used to do regularly. You’ll need this in order to talk about continuous events in the past. And if you want to discuss an ongoing action that has already come to an end, you’ll need l’imparfait (the imperfect). While the present tense is good to know, you’ll most likely want to discuss other time periods. ‘You make him laugh’ Faire Conjugation in the Imperfect Tense For this, the verb faire conjugates normally and the following verb will be in the infinitive. You can also utilize faire the same way you do in English when talking about ‘making’ or causing someone to do something. You can also use it to talk about the sounds animals make. You can often see faire in the passé simple in books when characters have dialogue. The verb faire can also be used when quoting or reporting what others say. When doing so, the verb is always paired with the personal il and conjugated for the third person singular. One of the most common uses of the verb faire is for describing the weather. Likewise, there are a lot of set expressions that utilize the faire conjugation. While faire can mean ‘to do’ or ‘to make’ in most situations, it also has many other uses that include weather, quotations, causation and making people do things. Generally, you can use the verb faire in the same way you would use ‘do’ or ‘make’ in English. That being said, this is a must-know verb in French since it’s one of the most commonly used verbs in the language. While the faire conjugation can be a bit tricky, it’s less complicated than the être or avoir conjugation. The good news is that this is the most irregular form of the faire conjugation so they get easier from here. Faire Conjugation in the Present Tenseįirst off, let’s see what the faire conjugation looks like in le présent (the present tense). While the verb is one of the most common in French, the faire conjugation is also quite irregular. This verb comes up a lot in French is one that you will use a lot and need to know. Most often it means ‘to do’ or ‘to make’, but it has several other meanings. The verb faire is very versatile and has a lot of meanings. The verb faire is a very irregular verb that is also essential to know in French. You don’t have to study French for very long to know how difficult and unpredictable the verbs can often be. So if your company's acquiring another one, and you want to immediately see the value of your investment inside your, let's say, brand, inside your umbrella, you can do that. And that's where I can see for a certain period of time because I know that is a migration, a mix and match of frameworks.Īnd another option could be when you are acquiring your company. Deploying production alongside the previous application and starting to generate value for the users because we are going back to the real scope of why we are developing code. So when you are migrating, for instance, from a legacy application to a new one, or if you are migrating an application from an older version of the framework to a new one, what you want to do, instead of going stealth mode for a month and then deliver something in front of your customer, is taking a vertical of your application and start to iterate on that. Therefore, in my opinion, there are certain situations where having multiple frameworks might help with micro-frontends. Now, despite that you can, it doesn't mean that you have to. And I remember back in the days when React came out, there were some experiments on that using the React library as UI and the rest of the Angular framework for the state management and the rest of the application. Technically speaking, you can mix React and Angular. So imagine that you have a single-page application. The challenge I see, and usually is this example that I made. Luca Mezzalira: Despite the architectural pattern that you're going to take on micro-frontends, I would say that is a misconception that was raised by the community for several years now. But where do you see both in the vertical and in the horizontal split with the app shell, how do you see how you can handle that? Because I think one thing that I've come across a lot is the question, "Can I use different frameworks for different parts of my micro-frontend? Or should I use the same one for everyone? Should I use Angular and React mixed, and some use Angular and some React? Or should I always use React for all of them?" Not looking at Angular or React right now. Lucas Dohmen: Let's dive into that topic as well. What framework to use for micro-frontends? In my humble opinion, usually, if you are capable of keeping that as framework-agnostic as possible, it opens up also the possibility in the future to evolve the micro-frontends without the coordination of having the application shell that is holding you to experiment. The interesting part is that with the very light implementation, there are several technologies that you can handle. So the application shell, when we do on the client-side, we can decide to go with horizontal or vertical or both, as we said before. It's also responsible for delinking, that usually comes for free out of the box when we are implementing the application shell and is usually used either within the horizontal or vertical split. And what it is responsible for is loading the micro-frontends and routing the URL basically on where the user wants to go, and then loading the right micro-frontends associated with that. The application shell is unaware of the business domain, or it should be as much as possible because that is a common part. So when you type your, the first thing that you download in that case is an application shell. The application shell is the first thing in a fat client, as it is called, or rich client-side application that you usually download. But before we get into that, I would say let's first look into the app shell, I think most people are not aware of what exactly that means. Micro-frontends is already a word where different people have different ideas of what it means. |
